A striking Imari charger, richly decorated in cobalt blue with an auspicious composition of pine, cranes and tortoises.

Graceful cranes appear along the rim, each set above a band of raimon — the traditional stylised thunder motif. Tortoises are positioned against delicate hyōretsu-mon, or cracked-ice patterns, creating an intricate interplay of organic and geometric forms.

The combination of crane and tortoise — Tsuru-Kame — is a classic auspicious motif in Japanese art, symbolising longevity and good fortune. The pine further reinforces this symbolism, traditionally associated with endurance and long life.

The decoration appears to combine cobalt blue underglaze painting and fine transfer printing, allowing remarkable detail while retaining the character of traditional Japanese porcelain decoration.

Small firing marks, iron spots and irregularities visible across the reverse are characteristic of traditional kiln production and add to the individual character of this piece.
