Late Edo Kurawanka-style Blue & White Dishes – Set of Four

A charming set of four late Edo-period blue and white dishes, with the simple, expressive decoration characteristic of Kurawanka-style tableware.

The story of Kurawanka begins on the waterways of Osaka. During the Edo period, small boats known as Kurawanka-bune approached passenger boats travelling along the Yodo River near Hirakata, calling out, “Mochi kurawanka, sake kurawanka” — roughly, “Won’t you have some rice cakes? Won’t you have some sake?” The sturdy bowls and dishes used to serve these everyday foods eventually became known as Kurawanka ware.

Although the name and story are rooted in Osaka, much of the tableware associated with Kurawanka was produced in Hasami, in present-day Nagasaki, where large-scale production of affordable everyday porcelain helped make ceramic tableware accessible to ordinary people throughout Japan.

These dishes embody that humble, practical spirit. Their hand-painted cobalt decoration, slightly irregular forms, and traces of age give each piece its own character.

Made for everyday use then, they remain wonderfully suited to everyday living now — from small appetisers and seasonal dishes to simple accompaniments at the table.
